ECTN Certificate Validity Period
ECTN validity tied to the Bill of Lading — No Independent Expiry.
In most countries, the ECTN certificate is tied to its corresponding bill of lading. As long as the cargo and B/L information remain unchanged, the certificate stays valid. This means:
- No fixed expiration date
- Valid as long as the cargo under that B/L hasn't cleared customs yet
- Vessel delays usually don't affect validity

What to Do If the Vessel Is Delayed
This is one of the most common questions. Generally no action needed — certificate remains valid
Important: If the vessel name, voyage, or B/L number changes, you must notify us to update the certificate information. Otherwise, you may encounter issues at destination.
Common Timing Questions
Q: Will ECTN expire if I apply 1 month early?
A: In most countries, ECTN has no fixed validity — it's bound to the B/L. Applying 1 month early is safe.
Q: The sailing date was pushed back — is my ECTN still valid?
A: As long as the B/L number and cargo information haven't changed, the certificate is usually still valid. We recommend confirming if the destination country has any special requirements.
Q: We changed the destination port — is ECTN still valid?
A: If the new port is within the same country, it can usually be amended. If it's a different country, you'll need a new certificate for that country.
Q: What about returned cargo or transshipments?
A: Returned cargo usually doesn't need ECTN (it's not an import). For transshipments, if the final destination requires ECTN, you still need to apply. Contact us for specific cases.
